Time Management For Employees

So you have a manager.

And the manager needs to be happy. There's little worse than working for a nervous boss.

As an employee, you will have a job description. Although you might be doing a lot more than what is covered on the job description…

When time management becomes an issue at work, ideally you would discuss it with your manager.

Sometimes that might not feel like a good idea. So you need to take control of the situation by managing your time effectively.

Here's how:

Take that job description, and expand it so that it genuinely does cover all aspects of the job you perform for the company and for your manager.

There are 3 types of task to identify:

  1. One off action steps
  2. Long-term projects
  3. Regular tasks

If you have a manager to keep happy, then you probably have to provide regular updates. Possibly once per week.

Your manager needs to appreciate how much time everything takes you to accomplish. That way, the manager will get off your case if he or she can see how much you do, and appreciate how much time it takes.

So create lists showing the general project areas you are working on, and all of the regular tasks that you must do for those projects.

Also create a list of the one off action steps that you still have oustanding.

Then open your calendar and open your mind to wonder and curiosity.

Sit there starting at the calendar, staring at the list of projects, one-off tasks, and regular tasks, and let your mind explore the possibilities, difficulties, and opportunities with fitting your work into your time at the office, or wherever you work.

You may find that by going through this hard thinking proess, you uncover a good balance between all of your activities.

If you are still stuck, get help.

If your relationship is good enough with your manager, take your projects and lists of tasks to a meeting with your manager, and discuss how to get all of these things done. Your manager will be able to help you prioritize the businesses priorities.
